The Bokashi Urbalive has a useful 10.6-liter capacity, ideal for daily kitchen use. Delivered as a complete kit, it includes everything needed to start immediately and easily compost your food waste.

This model stands out with its integrated drawer for collecting fermentation liquid, making it easy to recover the precious Bokashi tea without handling waste. Its compactor, designed across the entire width of the bucket, ensures effective compression of organic material and reduces the presence of air—crucial for successful fermentation.

Bokashi isn't a classic composter, but rather a maceration process that eliminates food scraps. It uses EM (activator) bacteria, which are added to speed up the fermentation of organic waste in the Bokashi.

Bokashi Urbalive in the kitchen

The word “bokashi” is a Japanese term meaning “fermented organic matter”. It is fermented by EM (friendly bacteria). These bacteria will speed up the fermentation process of organic waste in the composter.

Bokashi has positive effects on soil—it improves the earth, nourishes your garden, and helps the planet by reducing everyday waste. Making your own compost with a Bokashi is very easy. Thanks to its discreet, compact design, it’s perfect as a kitchen composter.

The Bokashi EM-1 activator, with high fermentation, is made by Moutta Farm!
Our ingredients are carefully selected and we use the official EM-1 from Professor Teruo Higa, the distinguished inventor of bokashi, to ensure top quality.
We use ingredients sourced from our region: wheat bran from Gers (32) and molasses from Béarn (64).

WHY TWO BOKASHIS?
The benefit of a two-bucket kit:

While the fermentation process takes place in the first composter (over 15 days), the second one is available for collecting new waste (the following 15 days).

We recommend using two Bokashis. Once the first is full, it needs to be closed and left to ferment for 2 weeks. During this period, you can start filling up the second bucket!

Advantages

This indoor composter has several strengths:

  • Transparent drawer to collect the compost tea as it drains, avoids liquid lingering in the bucket, and improves the fermentation of dry waste.
  • When the compost tea drawer is opened, an automatic tap system prevents the liquid from continuing to pour out.
  • The lid has a very wide seal, making it completely airtight and easy to open and close.
  • The compactor is the width of the bucket, letting you compact easily without getting it on your hands.
  • The bottom has a sieve and 3 interchangeable fabric filters. The filter lets only compost tea pass and prevents clogging the tap.
  • Compact, stylish, and above all odourless—everything is designed so this composter integrates seamlessly into your home.

Principle and use:

  1. Put your cooked and uncooked food scraps in the composter.
  2. Sprinkle with two tablespoons of Bokashi activator.
  3. Compact your waste using the provided compactor to extract air from the organic matter.
  4. Always keep the lid closed—the less air inside, the better.
  5. Drain excess liquid with the tap at the base of the composter.

When the bucket is full, empty the contents into a small hole or trench in your garden (in the green waste bin, in a worm composter, or even at the waste centre).

The waste will be fermented, but not yet decomposed at this stage. It must be incorporated into the soil to break down physically into humus. Alternatively, the organic material from the bucket can be added to your garden composter. For best results, keep this material covered with soil and other compostable items.
